Berry Basics

By Sidra Forman

Now is the perfect time to enjoy berries. Although they're available year-round, the ones you'll buy now are the freshest and tastiest. These antioxidant-packed bites are easy to eat, portable and versatile--enjoy them plain, throw them into smoothies, or add them to your cereal. Check out below for details on when to buy different berries, and new ways to use them.

Strawberries
In season: Strawberry season starts in mid-May and lasts through June.
Pick the best berry: Look for berries that smell delicious and are red throughout. Berries that are white or green near the stem are not ripe, so steer clear.
Tasty tip: Add them to your salad for a sweet topping.

Raspberries
In season: Local raspberries are generally available June through August.
Pick the best berry: Raspberries are very perishable, so choose those that are plump and brightly colored, and eat as soon as possible.
Tasty tip: Puree them with a little oil and champagne vinegar to make a vinaigrette dressing.

Blackberries
In season: These berries start popping up in early July and are available through August.
Pick the best berry: Dark-colored berries are the juiciest and sweetest. Blackberries that aren't ripe can be extremely tart, so taste before buying if possible.
Tasty tip: Serve them as a side to poultry.

Blueberries
In season: These are best in July and August.
Pick the best berry: Look for dark-bluish or purple plump berries.
